President Nana Akufo-Addo has in an interview with CNN highlighted his government’s aim of creating an enabling environment to allow local businesses to thrive while wooing foreign businesses to invest in the Ghanaian economy.
This comes on the back of Twitter’s decision to base its African headquarters in Ghana.
When asked about measures put in place to push local businesses to expand and thrive on the international market, Akufo-Addo told CNN’s Zain Asher that his government has given equal opportunities to local and foreign investors, so people can be confident in the economy.
“What we’re trying to do here in Ghana is to create a level playing field for businesses whether foreign or domestic so that people can feel free and confident about investing in our economy. Because, first of all, we are trying to manage the economy in such a way that there’s stability in the way businessmen and individuals can make decisions.”
Akufo-Addo added, “Before Twitter came, Google in 2019 established its first artificial intelligence Centre in Africa in Ghana. This is some 18 months even before Twitter came, and we are doing all of that so they [the foreign companies] are recognizing that the Ghanaian state is stable.”
Twitter announced its decision to establish its African Headquarters in Ghana on Monday, April 12, 2021.
According to Twitter, the move will grant the company the opportunity to “be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent”.
It also explained that the reason behind choosing Ghana as its Africa headquarters is because the country is the champion for democracy, and also practices freedom of speech and online freedom.
Already, Twitter has advertised employment opportunities for its office in Ghana.
President Nana Akufo-Addo, welcoming the move by the social media network, earlier acknowledged that the partnership between Twitter and Ghana is critical for the development of Ghana’s technology sector.
Since the announcement, many Ghanaians have also expressed their excitement over the news.
