The Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) has announced its intention to undertake a nationwide publicity campaign in 2020 in respect of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The AfCFTA, which is a trade agreement between 54 African union member states, has Ghana serving as the secretariat. Although series of activities have already been executed, the fact of the matter is that lots of people lack adequate knowledge and understanding about AfCFTA and the benefits that are associated with it. Without effective education, the citizens will not be able to take full advantage of the various opportunities and benefits that the trade agreement offers.

It is therefore refreshing to note that GEPA is taking steps towards ensuring the sensitization of Ghanaians on the relevance of AfCFTA so that Ghanaians become successful participants as well. Free trade is a good policy by all standards as it increases access to quality but competitively priced goods, promotes fairness and growth, improves efficiency and innovation such as digital transformation of economies, as well drives competition and advances trade value chains, hence if properly embraced will help not only boost the economy but transform lives in general.

Of great importance is the need for technical expertise for which we recommend that more initiatives should be established in the area of technical support to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) especially to build the required understanding, expertise and capacity needed to fuel the implementation of the agreement into success. If well implemented, businesses including members of the Ghanaian-German Economic Association, equally stands to reap tremendous benefits. It is for this reason that we offer our support towards the GEPA initiative.

The year 2019 has been an eventful year for the GGEA as we celebrated 20 years of fostering bilateral trade relations between private sector operators in Ghana and Germany. The 20th anniversary celebrations which coincided with the election and swearing in of new board of directors for the 2020 – 2022 year term, was crowned  with the honouring of three deserving personalities and one media organisation for their hard work, dedication, commitment, and support towards the Association and its activities as well as the country. The year 2019 has been great and we look forward to a promising 2020. GGEA wishes its stakeholders and clients a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The Association promises to continue offering you tailor-made customer centric-services and look forward to a continued business with you in 2020.
